*Pirates Ahoy!

Calling all buccaneers! Set sail for the museum to hear pirate tales, learn about Blackbeard and other notorious seafarers, make a seaworthy craft, and challenge a real pirate to a sword fight.


*Make It, Take It: Pirate Lore
Saturday, Aug. 1
1-3 p.m. (This is a drop-in program.)
Dangerous pirates once prowled the waters along the coast of North Carolina. Make a portrait of Blackbeard, the most feared pirate of them all.


*Time for Tots: Beat the Heat
Tuesday, Aug. 4 or Aug. 11
10-10:45 a.m.
Ages 3-5 with adult

Learn how people in the past kept cool in hot weather, listen to a story, and make a summer craft.


*History Corner: Boats on the Coast

Learn about the boats that people on our coast built and used to go to work, school, church, and just about everywhere else. Make a model workboat to take home. Presented with Cameron Village Regional Library.


First Friday at the Movies: The Black Pirate
Friday, Aug. 7
7-9 p.m.
Watch Douglas Fairbanks Sr. at his swashbuckling best. Fairbanks plays a young nobleman who joins the pirate band responsible for his father’s death. This 1926 silent classic is filled with action, romance, and special effects. Free popcorn and beverages!


History à la Carte: A Century of 4-H: Head, Heart, Hands, and Health

Stop by the Gallery Cart outside the exhibit On Earth’s Furrowed Brow to explore the world and work of mountain farm families in western North Carolina with a museum docent.


*Make It, Take It: Model Boats
Saturday, Aug. 29
1-3 p.m.
Fold yourself a model boat. Then look at examples of North Carolina boats in the exhibit Workboats of Core Sound.

Saddle up for a lesson on North Carolina’s fastest sport — before NASCAR, that is. Learn about famous horses, jockeys and racetracks. This program is presented with Cameron Village Regional Library.

*First Friday at the Movies: “Long John Silver”
Friday, Sept. 4
7-9 p.m.
In this 1954 Australian flick, the sly pirate Long John Silver schemes and double-crosses friend and foe alike while saving a young friend from walking the plank. Free popcorn and beverages!

History à la Carte: North Carolina Women of Influence
Wednesday, Sept. 9 12:10-1 p.m.
Bring your lunch; beverages provided.
Louise Benner, Curator of Costume and Textiles. Throughout the Tar Heel State’s history, women have overcome strong odds to achieve prominence in traditionally male occupations and participate fully in all areas of public life. Find out about some of these notable North Carolinians.

*Talk Like a Pirate!

Benjamin Cherry, Actor and Historian. Celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day by seeing Blackbeard in a swashbuckling one-man show. Learn about pirates of yore and find out what is really known about Blackbeard (aka Edward Teach). There might even be a duel!

*Make It, Take It: Pirate Flags
Saturday, Sept. 19 1-3 p.m. (drop-in program)
Identify the flags of some of the fiercest pirates to sail the seven seas and make your own Jolly Roger to take home.

*Weaving Demonstration
Sunday, Sept. 20
1-3 p.m. (drop-in program)
Weave it together! Watch a museum volunteer weave on a loom in the Pleasing to the Eye exhibition. Learn about the parts of a loom and try your hand at weaving fabric.

*Farm Fresh Family Day
Saturday, Sept. 26 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Enjoy a fun-filled day at the museum and discover North Carolina’s agricultural roots! Learn about native crops and homegrown products, go on a history hunt in the museum, and try your hand at ginning cotton, planting seeds, and much more.

October is National Apple Month. Celebrate this fresh, healthy, tasty mountain treat with a lesson, a story and a taste test! The program is presented with Cameron Village Regional Library.

*First Friday at the Movies: “The Pirate of the Black Hawk”
Friday, Oct. 2 7-9 p.m.
In this 1958 action-packed adventure, a dashing pirate and his loyal crew agree to rescue a duke’s daughter from evil pirates and restore her brother to his rightful throne. Free popcorn and beverages!

*Time for Tots: Down in the Pumpkin Patch

October means pumpkins! Find out about the different varieties and uses of pumpkins and gourds. Then decorate your own tiny pumpkin to take home.

Exhibit Opening: A New Land, “A New Voyage”
Friday, Oct. 9
View rare first-edition volumes, maps, illustrations, specimens and artifacts related to Lawson’s travels in the Carolina colony, as well as the works of later naturalists who explored North Carolina.

Music of the Carolinas: Music From the North Carolina Piedmont
Sunday, Oct. 11 3-4 p.m.
The 2009-2010 series kicks off with a concert featuring N.C. Folk Heritage Award winners and other Piedmont musicians in conjunction with the release of the CD “Anthology of String Band Music From the North Carolina Piedmont.” PineCone and the N.C. Arts Council Folklife Program co-sponsor the performance.

Peter White, Director, N.C. Botanical Garden. Hear about the botanical treasures of our state and the natural history accounts of early explorers in North Carolina, including John Lawson, William Bartram, Thomas Harriot and John White.

*Government Matters!
Saturday, Oct. 17 1-3 p.m.
What does a mayor do? How does the city council affect you? Representatives from local governments across Wake County will discuss these and other issues in the 2009 Education Forum for middle- and high-school students.
