Chief's Challenge 2012
Arapahoe Nation, as mentioned at our Fall Outings, this year’s Chief’s Challenge is designed to help you and your Little Brave/Princess learn more about the history and tradition of the American Indian. At the very heart of our Y Guides program is the active involvement of the father in his children’s lives, and, as you know, this was drawn from the American Indian tradition where the father had a primary role in raising the family. Thus, I felt it to be an appropriate challenge and show of respect to spend some time looking deeper into this culture, and specifically into the tribes that are indigenous to North Carolina.
In order to earn this year’s Chief’s Challenge patch, complete five of the following activities:
| |
Name the eight state recognized Native American tribes in North Carolina.
Identify on a state map the region of NC where these eight tribes predominately lived.
At a tribal meeting, explain to your tribe what role was played by an American Indian in the creation of the Y Guides Program.
Big Brave and child research the Trail of Tears and report to your tribe at a meeting.
Big Brave and child visit the website of one North Carolina’s recognized Native American tribes and report what you have learned at a tribal meeting.
Learn to say “Hello” in a Native American language and use it in place of “How-How” at a tribal meeting.
Discuss the following items associated with Native Americans and determine if they were prevalent in the tribes in North Carolina
- Teepee
- Feather headdresses
- Animal skin clothing
Describe the Native American relevance of the symbols we use in our tribal meetings
- Totem Pole
- Tom Tom
- Wampum
- Talking Stick
- Leather Vest
- Bear Claws
- How-How greeting

I hope these activities will give you a greater appreciation and respect for the American Indian and their traditions. I am happy to share with you a some additional information and research and would be glad to attend one of your tribal meetings to share with you.
A very special tip of the head band goes to former Nation’s Chief Wide Wing (Alan Dickinson) for his input on this Chief’s Challenge.
Fathers in Native American culture were extremely strong influences on their children, and I commend each of you for taking a strong, positive role in the life of your sons and daughters.
How-How,
Fishing Fox
